On December 18, 2015 JiaJia was brutally slashed across her face and throat by an attacker as she walked to school. The assailant is still at large and JiaJia was left with over two hundred stitches.
My wife and I recently had the opportunity to visit JiaJia. When we asked her if she wanted to return to her country she said, without hesitation: "No, I still want the Dream"
We have a responsibility to help this extraordinary young woman. JiaJia embodies the grit, determination, and resilience that has made this city, state, and country great.
My office is doing everything possible to help her recover and to help her return to her studies.
First, we must catch this attacker. Please spread the word on your social media and please call 1-800-577-TIPS if you have any leads.
Secondly, you can help JiaJia by donating to a fund set up by my office to support her recovery. Donate by clicking here www.GoFundMe.com/SupportJiaJia or by sending a check to:
"The JiaJia Liang Trust" at the Office of Gary Park Law Firm at 39-01 Main Street #608, Flushing, New York 11354.
Let's give this teenage girl another shot at the American Dream.
Statements from Community Leaders
Karlin Chan, Chinese Action Network, states: "The attack on this young girl is an attack on every decent citizen of NYC. I hope the City will come together to support her and her family as they deal with extensive and expensive reconstructive surgery in the future and I hope people can donate whatever they can to help defray the costs."
Gary Park, The Law Offices of Gary S. Park, P.C., states: "My firm is proud to offer our pro-bono legal services in the creation and future maintenance of the special trust fund. Our communities are saddened and upset about what happened to this teenage girl and my law firm decided to step in to offer our legal services pro-bono. We spent the last couple of weeks meeting with the victim’s family and structuring a trust fund for her where the money raised can only be used for her recovery and future education.
My law firm in conjunction with the victim’s family will act as co-trustees of the special trust fund to ensure that the donations collected for the victim are protected and used solely for the benefit of the victim and her future well being. My law firm’s role as a trustee will continue indefinitely until all the funds collected are disbursed for the benefit of the victim. As a member of the board of trustees for the Queens Botanical Garden, Flushing YMCA and CUNY Law school, I am proud and honored to support the communities of Queens in any capacity."
June Jee, Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA-NY), states: "OCA-NY and our community are extremely concerned about these attacks. We hope the New York City Police Department is doing their utmost to apprehend the assailant(s) and to prosecute to the fullest extent. We need reassurance that the City will provide relevant resources for our communities especially those who have limited English proficiency to report crimes or report unusual activities. What is also very important right now is our support for this young exchange student as she recovers from this violent and traumatic incident."
Frank Liu, Esq., Law Office of Frank Liu, stated: As a parent of two teenagers, I feel bad for what the victim had to go through. I also understand that she will have to go through more in the future. As an immigrant attorney, helping her obtain legal status in the United States as a victim of crime is the least I can do. I wish her the best and I also hope law enforcement will catch the criminal responsible for this horrible crime as soon as possible.”
Edward Ip, one of the first contributors, stated: “I was honored to have the opportunity to help translate for the innocent young victim at a time when she couldn’t speak due to her wounds. As a father of three children, I can’t imagine the pain that the mother is going through and I want to do what we can to put the attacker away. Meanwhile, I’m proud to announce to commit over $2,500 toward the trust fund for JiaJia and I encourage others to supper her with her recovery.”
